In the 1820s, the area was known as Centerton, serving as a central point on the overland route between the Mississippi and Missouri rivers, settled by both German and French immigrants. The City of Olivette was officially incorporated as a charter city in 1930, formed through the merging of four communities: Central, Olive, Stratmann, and Tower Hill. Olivette sits at an elevation of 700 feet above sea level, making it one of the highest points in St. Louis County. Recognizing its prime location, the City of St. Louis chose Olivette in 1926 as the site for the Stacy Park Water Reservoir, which can hold up to 100 million gallons of water. In the 1920s, migrant workers and their families, who were building the reservoir, lived in tents on the land where Old Bonhomme School now stands. From its roots as a quiet country village and farming area to its rise as a booming residential suburb and growing industrial and business center, Olivette has consistently embraced each new phase of growth with energy and initiative.
