Our outreach and charitable giving committee seeks worthy causes and institutions to support, including Roosevelt High School and Shenandoah Elementary School. Community Garden: Cal Thomas Begun by neighbors in 1999, the Tower Grove East Community Garden at Sidney Street and Virginia Avenue features more than two dozen garden plots, an arbor, beehive, grapevine, and a picnic table, and offers free plants, produce and canned goods to passersby. We hold a spring plant sale, and our Halloween Haunted Garden festival is fast becoming a neighborhood tradition. Join the waiting list for a bed at tgegarden@gmail.com . Meanwhile, stop by and visit if you see someone working in the garden. Orchard: Susan Herzberg In 2013, after four homes were razed in the Tower Grove East Neighborhood, residents met to decide how to use the space. A seed was planted and the Orchard on Virginia began to grow. With continued growth, our vision of a dynamic urban food forest has become a reality. Visit us every season to experience its many personalities. Do stop by to take a sample from our fruit trees. Join us for community events such as our spring egg hunt and fall kid-friendly concert and cookout. Spread the word about community-based urban gardening. Together, we grow! Block Captains: Cal Thomas Tower Grove East is fortunate to have an active group of block captains: volunteers who work to strengthen relationships among neighbors, our neighborhood and our city. Block captains maintain regular communication with residents on their blocks and coordinate block events such as meetings, parties and cleanups. They help connect neighbors to each other and to neighborhood and city resources. We are always looking for more neighbors to join us as block captains or co-block captains. If you are interested in learning more about volunteering or would like to learn who your block captain is, please contact tgeblockcaptains@gmail.com.
