We have some great public examples of native plant gardens in the city of St. Louis, several of which can be found throughout the North Hampton and Southampton Neighborhoods. In North Hampton, the nearly one-acre Tilles Park Pollinator Garden was established in 2017 by a collaborative effort of a non-profit, a neighborhood association and the local government. Sandwiched between the basketball and pickleball courts, this garden was created in response to 2011 research findings by Saint Louis University’s Billiken Bee Lab, which found the area surrounding Tilles Park contained some of the lowest bee diversity in the city. This garden now features plants and flowers that provide vital food and habitat for local wildlife including bees, butterflies and birds. The Tilles Park Pollinator Garden is currently under the care of the city of St. Louis’s Department of Parks, Recreation, and Forestry. In Southampton, the neighborhood association has been creating native gardens since 2012, beginning with Marie’s Wedge at the intersection of Itaska Street and January and Wherry avenues. Since establishing the garden at Marie’s Wedge, Southampton has adopted three additional sites, which are also owned by the city of St. Louis and maintained by the neighborhood’s volunteers. These gardens have been created with the support of city government and nonprofits such as Brightside St. Louis. Visit southamptonstl.org/landscaping to learn more!
