46 2026 | Clifton Heights-Clayton-Tamm Community Directory Trash & Recycling Rules Brown/Blue dumpsters – household trash only. Green dumpsters – yard waste only (no large limbs). IMPORTANT • Don’t mix yard waste, trash, or recycling—this costs the city more money and slows service. • Bulk items (e.g., furniture, tires, mattresses) are not allowed in dumpsters. • Construction debris is illegal to dump in alleys—take one free truckload/month to 4100 S. 1st Street with proof of residency. BULK TRASH PICKUP • Scheduled once a month —check the sticker on your dumpster. • Place no more than 3 items behind your property by 6 am Monday of your week. • Remove refrigerator doors for safety. ALLEY AND DUMPSTER CARE • Keep your half of the alley clean and free of weeds/trash . • Report broken alley lights to Ameren: 314-342-1000 . • Dumpsters: • Do not move or overfill. • Keep lids closed. • Leave 3 feet clear space around dumpsters. • No flammable or hazardous materials. • Shared only by residents on the same block . RECYCLING The city is ending alley recycling due to high contamination rates. Now, blue alley dumpsters will be used for trash only and collected with brown dumpsters. Why the Change • In FY2025, over 50% of recycling was rejected due to contamination. • Rejected loads go to the landfill—but at 5 times the cost of trash . • Drop-off sites keep recyclables cleaner and the program more efficient. How to Recycle Now Use one of the city’s 13+ Residential Recycling Drop-Off Sites —all located within 1 mile of every home. • Keep recyclables loose, clean, and dry • Pick up a free in-home recycling bin at St. Louis City Recycles • If transporting in a bag, reuse or toss the bag in the trash—plastic bags are not accepted in bins Find locations and recycling guidelines at stlcityrecycles.com. continue on page 48
